What this site is
The China Atlas publishes entry rules and practical requirements for travel in China, in several languages. Each version is written for its own reader rather than translated, because the rules themselves differ by nationality.
Every figure and every rule is attributed to the official notice it comes from, with the date that notice carries. Where something could not be verified, the text says so instead of filling the gap.
Affiliate links
Some links to partners are affiliate links: hotels through Stay22 and Booking.com, travel eSIMs and a few booking services through Travelpayouts. If you book after following one, The China Atlas receives a commission from the partner, at no extra cost to you. Every guide that contains such a link says so at the top, and each such link is marked with an asterisk.
Partners have no say in what the guides recommend, and no company has paid to appear or to be left out. The site carries no advertising and no sponsored content.
Photographs
Photographs come from Wikimedia Commons and Unsplash, and some are the site’s own, credited to The China Atlas. Each one is credited in its caption, with its author and, where there is one, the licence it is used under. Images under CC BY-SA are shared on the same terms.
Data protection
This site sets no cookies, carries no advertising trackers and, without your consent, embeds nothing from a third party. Its typefaces are served from this domain rather than fetched from Google, so loading a page sends your address to nobody but the host. Following an affiliate link takes you to the partner’s site, which may set its own cookies to attribute the booking.
Visits are counted with Vercel Web Analytics, which sets no cookie either. For each page view it records the page, the page you came from, an approximate location (country, region, city), and the type of browser, operating system and device. Visitors are told apart by a hash of the request, discarded after 24 hours, and the figures are only read in aggregate, to know which guides are used. The basis is legitimate interest under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR.
What remains is what every web server records: the hosting provider, Vercel Inc., logs each request with the IP address it came from, the time, the page requested and the browser string. That is personal data. It is processed to operate the site and keep it secure, on the basis of legitimate interest under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR, and it is not used to profile anyone, combined with anything else or passed on.
Vercel Inc. is based in the United States. That transfer rests on the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses, which Vercel’s data processing agreement includes.
You may ask what is held about you, have it corrected or erased, object to its processing, and complain to a supervisory authority: the CNIL in France, where the publisher is established, or the authority of the country you live in.
